Beginner trying to understand how to use the choke. So every time I start my nighthawk the first time for the day, I realize that the bike will rarely start without the choke being put into effect. Is this normal? If I start it in first or neutral and let it idle, it'll die in a few seconds unless I hold the clutch and give it a tiny bit of throttle and then throw on the choke. How am I suppose to be using the choke?

How to use choke

The underlying cause is the main circuit of the carb is running too lean. When you turn the choke on for a carburetor, it is creating a rich condition. When an engine is cold, it needs a little richer mixture in order to get up to operating temperature. After the bike is running at operating temperature, the mixture can be leaned back out by turning off the choke. Then, when you turn the choke off, it becomes much too lean and will not run. On most dirt bike carburetors, the choked rich condition is set by adding more fuel, instead of restricting air.

On a lawn mower or chainsaw, the choke condition is set generally by a little butterfly that restricts the airflow. There are two obvious causes for this to happen. The first, and most common is that the carb is simply dirty.

The pilot jet may be gummed up because you have been running dirty gas, old gas, or simply stored the dirt bike with fuel still in the carb. The second possible cause of this is less common but still something that needs to be checked. It can be caused by an air leak. Air leaks can be caused by cracks in the vacuum lines on some carbs, a crack in the air boot, or simply a loose clamp between the carb and the air boot.

The first thing I do when I have a bike that is exhibiting this problem is to check for air leaks. The reason is because this can be done without taking anything off the dirt bike.

To check for air leaks, grab some carburetor cleaner or starting fluid. Put the choke on and start the bike up. The switch is typically located on the right handlebar. Turn the dial on the gas line to the on position. Look for the metal dial on the left side of the bike right behind the engine.

Make sure the dial is pointing down to open the fuel line. This allows fuel to enter the engine so your bike can start. Look near the tubes and the engine to find the valve. Look for the black choke valve at the front of the engine on the left side of your bike. It will either look like a small plastic gear or a lever. Grab the top of the valve with your fingers and gently pull it up to open it.

When your bike has been running and the engine is still warm, it is considered a warm start. Shift your bike into neutral. Use the clutch on the left handlebar and the shifter near your left foot to switch the bike into neutral position if it is not already there.

While in neutral, your bike should rock back and forth freely when you move it. Crank the throttle fully 3 times for a 4-stroke engine. After opening the fuel line and the choke as well as shifting into neutral, use your right hand to twist the throttle on the handlebar.
